Shepherd’s End and Dwarven Farms
Spring 9

Eventually they agree to tell the mayor and sheriff everything, after burying the explosives in a distant location. Salinger also tells the dwarves about the weapons and jewelry found, and Grem says they don’t know what they’re messing with and to gather it all up and bring it to the farm.

They eventually decide to do so (after a small quake occurs), but step outside and find the village in shock, as the sky has turned an unnameable color that’s never been seen before. Gilgain has no explanation for this, nor does anyone else asked.

The kids meet up with the Roughguts and make the exchange. During the exchange, the dwarves imply they were conquered by the armies of Lux, which the others had never heard of. They also say that the jewelry is cursed, and bind themselves to whoever puts them on; if they’re separated from their item now, they’ll die. All those items were made by the duergar, a cursed people who served darker things.

Esmund has a panic attack and goes off to find his mother and have a breakdown. Peach and Salinger find Kibeth and Aureya to warn them not to take off their items; Kibeth seems unfazed, and says she’s really fast and really hungry now.

Ava beelines back to Teredian, who finds some writings of duergar prisoners who grew ill and died after three days in captivity separated from their belongings, despite having food and water. He tells her to experiment by taking it off for a few hours, which Xalati is outraged by, and gets Ava to promise not to try it without her.

Ava overhears the mayor and sheriff talking and saying that magic has stopped working.
