Esmund and Ava head to the lighthouse, while Xalati and Kibeth go to the ranch barn to check on their families.
Everyone at the barn is largely okay, and eventually decide to leave most people there while Xalati and Ash check out the ranch and perhaps retrieve the herds, Kaisi and Kibeth intercept the train and warn the driver to slow down, and Peach and Aureya rejoin Esmund and Ava at the lighthouse and consult with them. Salinger and Seyfried stay behind to guard the families (not very effectively, as Yev slips out).
Esmund breaks the news. (by Kate Quimby)At the lighthouse, most of the missing people they wanted to find, including Mulgwud, are still missing. Ava and Mulgwud undertake a risky but effective operation to rid Madine of the pudding gestating in her, effectively letting her die temporarily to get the pudding to leave and then shocking her back into life.
Peach and Aureya arrives, and Esmund has the rough job of telling Peach about Miranda’s heroic death. Aureya catches Gwin about to head out secretly to try and find Mulgwud, and manages to persuade her not to do so; Gwin tells her about a tower a few days’ travel away, where they found Esmund, and where weapons might be hidden. She asks her not to tell Esmund about it, though.
At the ranch, Xalati and Ash find all the herd dead, and most of them incubating fire jellies. A trail leads south. They run back to the barn.
At the railroad track, Yev catches up with Kaisi, and they find the body of Grem the sympathetic dwarf, with cartons of dynamite and footprints like the creature that had knocked down the blue laurel chicken pen.
