Galoring
210 - 211

Sav spent the first few weeks on the street alone, watching the other bands of children. She’d known of their existence, of course, but her interest in them had been nonexistent so long as they seemed academic, unimportant to her life of stage and sound and drama. Now, with nothing else to occupy her attention, she turned it toward survival.

Appealing to the adults of the quarter was a futile effort. Some of them might toss the occasional coin, and there were some from the theater who would slip her bread and leftover food regularly, but no one would stand between her and the kicks of the guards or give her shelter. She took the kindness where she could, and looked for other answers where she couldn’t.

After several weeks of observation, she approached one of the bigger, but less cruel bands and asked to join. She brought some of the food the actors of the Spindlemark had given her, and offered it as a bribe.

They took it, and then threw rocks at her until she retreated, stunned and bleeding.

She eventually formed a wary alliance with some of the other, smaller street urchins, a ragged band of individuals who only gave as much as they got, both good and bad. It provided some safety, but never friendship. When the Swans came, they all fled one by one, and were swept up piecemeal.
