The Remnants
The Beauty
55 Spring 218
Vanja, post-box (by Jessica Dru)Vanja catches up with various party members, has her arm rebroken by Roux to help it heal straight and learns about the man formerly known as Bax. We get to know the members of the ship’s crew: York, Pelham, Garth, Taren, and Easter. Sav finds some journals among the Inquisitor’s belongings; she doesn’t destroy the box Vanja was stored in, on Ethan’s request, but does clean it out. Sav also inquires into Athelia’s magic, who shares a little of what she can do.
Sylas and Astarael chat, and Sylas discovers he can read people’s true names.
They question the lone captive Swan, Caphil; Roux beats his face in, while Vanja removes an eye via Inflict Wounds before healing him back sans eye. Vanja and Astarael quarrel as Astarael wants to keep him alive and see if his information holds true, while Vanja wants to kill him. The boys talk among themselves; Sylas and Ethan think Vanja probably shouldn’t be allowed to kill Caphil, while Roux says if she still wants revenge after he talks to her, he’ll help her.
Sav, watching Caphil in the brig, decides independently to do it and shoots him in the head, then throws up.
The others strip and clean the body to drop it overboard; Vanja asks what the hell happened, and Sylas starts to claim responsibility before Sav returns and says no, it was her. Vanja starts to have a panic attack and ask why, and arguments arise as Ethan tries to explain why it happened. Sav peaces out to the crow’s nest instead of partaking in the discussion.
Ethan's Campfire Synopsis
After a nights sleep, Ethan spends the early morning taking care of Vengeance. While tending to the only pet he’s ever known, he hears Vanja scream somewhere above deck. Roux was going to help her reset her arm and collar bone - it is an unpleasant procedure, he reasons.
Roux appears a short time later to confirm this and Ethan makes his way to check in with Vanja. As they speak, Vanja begins to confess that gave the Inquisition information about the group. Barely able to stand, Ethan assured her that they will need to talk but that it can wait.
He moves away to have a brief talk with Avarian. The talk is longer than he expects and mostly serves to remind Ethan of the (former?) First Mate’s reticent nature. Mentally, Avarian earns the nickname Johnny Tightlips.
When the time comes to question their prisoner, Astarael and Vanja both request to be present for the interrogation. Ethan’s only request is that they not kill the man and happily waits outside the room while the two of them and Roux go inside to get answers.
The interrogation quickly falls apart. All of the questions asked are answered, but Vanja and Roux each attack the man. Astarael appears unable to intimidate the Swan with threats because he is too busy being actively assaulted.
The room is cleared. Ethan speaks with Roux and Sylas. Astarael stepped away to upbraid Vanja for her rash nature after the cleric blinded the bound, naked prisoner. Alone with the prisoner, and claiming she was frightened by Vanja’s uncharacteristically disturbing behavior, Sav executes the man.
The body is disposed of.
Later that night, while Ethan is practicing the only type of magic trick he knows, Bishop notes the dimensions of the box that held Vanja are larger outside than the space inside. There is a secret compartment.
Inside, Ethan finds Vanja’s frosted shield.
