Reunions, Part 2
54th day of Spring, Year 218
Campfire Synopsis from Ethan
Ethan has a discussion with Roux; he is convinced that an Inquisitor happening upon their particular ship is no coincidence. He believes the Inquisitor and his team knowingly stepped aboard a ship full of witches in order to harm them.
He is wrong.
Regardless, they both agree they want to act quickly to deal with the threat. They separate to round up the others.
Once together, the entire team agrees they want the unwelcome guests to leave in the most permanent way. Captain Athelia is amenable, if reluctant. She would prefer a different solution but is ultimately willing to help, revealing herself to be a witch as well.
They devise a plan for the captain to invite the soldiers to dinner, a fairly routine occurrence. With the rest of the regular crew safely out of the way, the soldiers would be poisoned and ambushed. Roles for this ruse are assigned, invitations are lovingly crafted, and a small feast is prepared for the makeshift table created on the deck.
Alas, it was not to be.
Shortly before the dinner, Tarth is playing a chess (?) game with the Inquisitor and the rest of his men in the ship’s hold. Tarth impresses the Inquisitor and is offered a job, and they shake hands, sealing the Inquisitor’s fate. Sylas is immediately killed, his soul stolen. One of the men begins to scream “Witch!” and a battle erupts below deck.
Caught off guard, and with the Inquisitor dead, the fight is still in favor of the ‘heroes’ who quickly dispatch the rest of the men, save one soldier knocked unconscious by Ethan.
Ethan is still extremely wary of the containers the soldiers brought aboard and wants to get them off the ship. They decide to take them ashore and then open them in case they are a trap.
While the ship makes its way to the shore, the boy who was Bax insists that they eat. During the course of the year’s most awkward dinner, the body of Ethan’s childhood friend reveals himself to be a creature called Sylas - an entity that came into existence after taking the name of the Inquisitor… and possibly much more.
Afterwards, once the crates and barrels have been taken ashore, Sav uses her skilled eye to appraise the containers (looking for traps) before using the key to open the ornate chest. Inside is the shackled, emaciated body of Vanja. She is miraculously still alive.
