Pudding Problems

Shepherd’s End
Spring 11

A gelatinous thing emerges from the comatose Fennel, killing him, and gets away (though parts of it are squashed). They discover from a book that when it takes on a color, it also takes on an elemental affinity, and the opposing element can hurt it.

Ava feels a delicate thread through Fennel and almost halts his progress into death, but doesn’t, remembering a warning Physicker Teredian had given her long ago, when she felt the same thing with a sickly alpaca. He dies, and she feels the death is on her own hands. Xalati goes to tell Fennel’s grandfather, who was his guardian, of his death.

Peach, Salinger and Kibeth run to tell Parsnip, the mayor’s second, of what happened. Parsnip wants someone to go find the sheriff and bring him back, he might know what to do. Peach and Sal agree to go with a horse that’s been lent to them.

The Hearth bell is rung and the town is warned. The kids in town discuss ideas on how to find the escaped pudding, including finding the sheriff, using the dynamite to blow up the hole and collapse it back down; they have the idea that perhaps it doesn’t like light, so they also include the idea to keep everything well-lit.
