Turning Red
Shepherd’s End
Spring 11
Xalati tells Temden, Fennel’s grandfather, of his death and remains to help him with chores and escort him back to the physicker to see what remains of Fennel.
After returning and discussing plans with the others, they split up to execute their various parts and see the town bakery is on fire. They manage to extinguish both it and the fire jelly (or rather, Kaisi stomps it out with his bare feet).
Peach and Aureya scout the town for stray jellies.
Kibeth returns to the sinkhole and finds nobody there, none of the workers who should be there, just abandoned tools and lunches. She returns to tell Esmund and Xalati, and they end up altering their plans slightly.
Aureya’s tail steals the cursed duergar sword from Kaisi, while she attempts to wrestle it back.
After realizing that blue jellies = lightning (as there is still a blue jelly at large, formed from Fennel’s blood) Peach and Esmund go to the Wanderlust and the lighthouse to turn off the powered engines there. Kibeth, Xalati and Kaisi go to Cadne ranch, where Xalati tells off Kaisi that she doesn’t need him to push her boundaries, then tells her family what happened with Fennel and the jellies and gathers up her family to collect them at the Hearth for safety.
Peach and Esmund lie to convince everyone at the Wanderlust to head to the Hearth and turn off the engine that powers the clock there. Upsettingly, Miranda flirts with Esmund before pinning him to the wall and tells him she knows he was lying, then gives him potions.
Kaisi investigates the dwarven homes alone, finding the mine entrance collapsed and the smell of gunpowder.
Gwin asks Aureya to get Esmund to dance to try and raise his popularity. Aureya is dubious about the effectiveness of this tactic.
As evening falls, the sound of panic on the edge of town, as well as pops and actinic blue flashes of light, reach the Hearth, where about half the town has gathered.
