After the battle, a few survivors limp out of the woodwork. Ash is alive, as is Lily, Ava’s sister. The rest of the town searches for more survivors and more supplies. Seyfried and Salinger find no more of their family.
The Verdict Vathedrian tells them that Giver and Fabricator magics don’t work in the city, either, and the Teleportation Circles also failed. He also speaks of an enormous, iron-shelled beast with spikes, the size of a building, that attacked Myrwood. He warns them that probably every place is inoperative, with teleportation and communication magics down, and thinks that they should fortify the town.
Ava operates on the Verdict to preserve and extend his life. Esmund helps, and suggests cutting deeper into his shoulder to provide a better base for future prosthetics; Ava hesitates and eventually does so, without his consent. They barely manage to save his life.
Xalati, searching the hills, feels her sister’s presence, unseen but—when she holds out her hands and shuts her eyes—tangible.
