When they roll over the corpse of the great auronachus, they find only a coin-sized purpley portal, no bodies of their friends.
Seyfried finds herself in a strange, purpley, shadowy land with a white tower rising in the distance, Ava unconscious next to her. The others are visible to her but intangible when she tries to grab them; those grabbed can only feel a faint shiver.
In the shadowy realm, something terrible approaches the hole in the air, glowing with a fearsome light; a child that looks like Xalati indicates for them to stay quiet and leads them far away into a hiding spot. They hide and shiver, until the fear and oppression slowly eases. They realize that the child must be Ixtalan, who died when she was 10; she tells them that she awoke in a place where apparently everybody was supposed to go, but she was the only one there. A mean grown-up named Sylas found her and told everything was wrong and to wait; when asked, she says he’s been gone awhile and was going to do something dangerous, but hasn’t returned yet.
Ava has a panic attack and sprints away, but Seyfried calms her down. On getting back to the original portal, they see the Angel of Doors closing it and moving away. Tala says it looks different from the others she’s seen here, and that the Angel of Doors sometimes makes them, sometimes closes them, but maybe it didn’t make this one.
Mohs appears and leads them in a direction toward the tower of terrifying light. Tala is unfamiliar with him.
In the real world, the remaining kids get attacked by a wave of smaller auronachuses and slaughter them. They find the enormous egg they were protecting—as big as Poppy—and they argue what to do with it, eventually settling on taking it with them.
Zephyrus, Esmund’s familiar, goes through the portal; Esmund feels a flash of dread, horror and a tumble of other emotions, then nothing as the connection cuts. The portal fades.
Kibeth carries the egg baby-Bjorn-style as they start to follow Kaisi’s shadow, which is pointing toward the other portal whose existence they know, the one that leads to the field. They realize that three people with three clawed toes came out from the portal.
Once there, the people on either plane are able to hear each other, while the people in the Place Between are able to see the ones in the Prime. Xalati and Tala have a time emotionally. Seyfried and Ava are able to come back into the material world, but Xalati, despite her best attempts, can’t go to where they were.
