Flashback: Autumn 35
Xalati goes to visit Ava at the physicker for an evaluatory test, and they end up having a philosophical debate once Ava asks how she is (everything sucks, but it is what it is). Ava says knowing her brother existed somewhere as a spirit might make her feel better but wouldn’t change anything, and Xalati gets angry at this and says of course it changes things, her sister is alone wherever-that-is, where Ava and Seyfried went and came back, and maybe it’s possible for Ixtalan to do so as well? Ava doesn’t want to think about it, because the thing on the other side scared her more than anything else that’s happened. She tells Xalati that she doesn’t have to carry things alone, and asks her to promise that she’ll take care of herself; Xalati takes her hands and promises her that if they have to cross over, she’ll be there to protect her. Their conversation is interrupted by a quake.
Autumn 39
They settle the hatchling into Kibeth’s brother’s room, now empty, and set two people to watch over her. Peach reads her mother’s journals while watching. Seyfried tries to teach her Sylvan in her sleep. Ava examines the hatchling in her sleep.
They eventually regroup and agree she can’t be hidden, name her Pretty Egg Girl Muna, and bring in a few moms to help raise her (Wynnfried, mother of thousands, and Gwin as an expert in adopting strange babies).
Vathedrian lets Esmund know that the walls are done and wants him to check on the construction, as well as checking on the progress for the device and if he can make more ammunition for the clockwork rifle.
