They Eat the Light
Underground Temple
Autumn 73
The hidden door leads down to a giant underground cavern, three dwarf statues facing away from them, and an equally-giant ballista pointing toward the stairs, with Dwarven writing that says: Spread the learning of our kin. Knowledge of the old. Beware the sky for they eat the light. There are signs of recent occupation, like a fire and the smell of cooking meat.
The mayor and some guards come pattering down, shocked and awed by the space of the cavern beneath. There are tales in the village of the founding of Alinge’s Pass, a winter that would never end, the terror of the puddings and the chickens, the King of the Up. Their ancestors fought and locked away a black pudding in a place it could never be found.
A wire in a tunnel is tripped, and horns, as well as rough, barking cries, sound. A number of emaciated, ragged-looking duergar types pour out of the tunnel holes, and combat is engaged.
During the fight, Kibeth grows large, accidentally pushes the dais down with her weight, and discovers there’s a similar button/dais above, which she also pushes. This opens the door at the other end of the chamber.
