Galoring
214
Astarael had been alone in her cell for a few hours, when the guard came to get her. She was brought down a hall to a room she has not yet been in. This one has a pit in the floor, with walls around it. The guard forces her mouth open, and a searing liquid is poured down her throat by another man. She is lowered into the pit. Bruised, weak, and thin from a lack of food, she can barely stand, and collapses to the ground. A knife is tossed before her. Astarael looks down at it, and then up to the opposite wall, as a wooden door begins to lift open. A voice says, “Best take the knife and stand up, or my hound will make quick work of you, girl.” She slowly grabs the knife, and stands. Behind an iron gate, a vicious dog begins to bare its fangs and growl. She closes her eyes, for just a moment, and pictures the sea by her home. She imagines the wind tousling her hair. The voice says, “NOW.” She opens her eyes, and lunges at the dog.
