At a Glance
Astarael Belree is a young woman from Moraeth. By nature of her origins, she stands out. Her skin is milky pale, she has ink black hair that almost shines like raven feathers, and her eyes are the grey color of a thunderstorm. Her face, though fair, is not one that smiles often. She has seen much pain and suffering over her many years of traveling the realm, and some of that suffering has been her own. But, it has also given her strength- more strength than you may guess of her slender frame. Her fury is a power to behold in itself. She still has much to learn about what she is capable of, but it’s safe to say that her abilities have caused her to catch the eye of some she would rather evade.
History
Astarael Belree is from the town of Maiden’s Drink. It’s a moderately sized village, located on a peninsula on Moraeth’s coast. A lighthouse at the end guides ships into its protected harbor, and shipping/trading is the most common source of income. Ships stay very close to the shore, due rocky islands and frequent violent storms that occasionally cause damage on land as well. Most that venture further offshore do not return. Nights are long in Moraeth, and the sun itself has a reddish tint, leading to most of the population being very pale.
Astarael grew up the only daughter of two up and coming metal-smiths. Her parents are not of noble blood, but are regarded as some of the finest craftspeople of the silver circle emblems in the area, worn as protection against dark things. The common people of Moraeth are very superstitious, and Astarael has heard rumors that the nobles make pacts with demons in order to gain dangerous powers.
Her parents were generally too busy to spend much time with her, and she assumed they were embarrassed of her. Most kids didn’t like her when she was young, and her parents kept her very isolated. She was forbidden from walking the streets alone, and was told it’s too dangerous. She’s pretty sure they were making plans to marry her up in society in order to raise their status. She spent most of her time reading, sewing, and visiting her Aunt. Her aunt is the one person who taught her useful skills. She suspects her aunt was once a bit of an adventurer, and now she lives just outside of town. From her she learns about foraging, hunting, cooking, playing card games, and how to speak Halfling. She also teaches Astarael how to calm her own mind, when her temper begins to get the better of her. She often practices this on the walk to and from her aunt’s, stopping at a favorite overlook on the cliffs. It’s the only place she’s allowed to go to alone.
Five years ago, Astarael Belree suddenly left her hometown. She set off on a journey to see the world, and eventually made it to Isendel. About a year in, she interfered with two Painted Swans interrogating a woman, and as a result, was captured by them.
Astarael spent about two years imprisoned in Galoring. She has firsthand knowledge of what happens if the Swans bother to keep you alive. She escaped with the aid of Eirlys Thorne.
She makes it to Northgate, gaining her magical item, the pact sword, along the way. This journey takes about two years. The plan was to escape to Jorung, but finding the way blocked by the Painted Swans, she decided to lay low, while creating a new plan. She then runs into Talith, who recognizes the vial of tincture around her neck as being identical to the one Danica wore. She evades him, but meets Roux as a result.
She and Roux hung out for two weeks, before he took her with him to meet his friends during the Autumn Turn’s Festival. Afterwards, she and Sav move into a place together.
