Starting Bio
Emma comes from the civilized side of town, the one opposite the forests and in the direction of the larger, settled cities. Emma is the elder child and only daughter of Corwin, an elderly, ambitious and striving country squire who married very late in life. She looks nothing like any of her sturdy peasant family, being pale, delicate, raven-haired, lovely and a full head taller than her own father.
Corwin’s primary crop is sugar cane: the juice is squeezed out, boiled down into molasses and sold at a huge profit to urban merchants, while the remaining fibers, after being treated with lime, are spun into thread and made into a rough cloth used for peasants’ clothes, sacking and horse blankets. This is how Corwin got the nickname Spinsugar, or sometimes “Spinsilver”. His general store is the sort of place where semi-important locals sit in the shade of a summer’s day and gossip. “Patron” is probably the best word to describe him.
Everyone in town knows that Corwin has spent years and rather a lot of his own money buttering up a local knight, who has one son, Sir Rory, who absolutely looks the part of a country nobleman: tall, bluff, square-jawed. Corwin is going to pay off the family’s debts and more in return for Rory marrying Emma and making her Lady Winterbourne.
Emma is the entrepreneurial rural medieval fantasy version of the hometown prom queen—or would be, if she could fully manage to conceal the fact that she’d rather be reading a book. Yet her wedding to Rory has yet to materialize, even though sweet but dim Rory rather dotes on her. If you are exceptionally perceptive, you will notice that Emma spends rather more time taking goods to market than is strictly necessary; her eyes are always on the far horizon.
She’s clever, informed, socially skilled and self-confident, but she doesn’t put on airs or act like a noblewoman: she dresses in nice but plain clothes, and she’s friendly and kind to her father’s tenants and the widows and orphans he employs to spin cloth. Only if you’re very perceptive and pay attention may you notice that she’s not always entirely present. Is she just a daydreamer? Or does she have some dark secret? You really don’t know.
