Talith disappears in a flash of white, and the disparate groups talk. Sav says they were in the mountains looking for lost survivors, and indicate Sal. They turn the troll into scrap meat and retreat into the caves to camp.
Sav helps Squire carry Vesper’s body into the cave and asks about him; Squire says he was a Dreamer and had lots of prophetic dreams. He says they were heading south, toward Night, and comments on Sav’s accent; she says she’s from a city far away, but left a while ago.
Peach and Salinger talk about having met Sylas and mention that he said the Raven Queen was gone, which worries Bax. Peach also mentions that Bax’s eye did something weird when Talith flickered out.
Peach and Salinger talk about growing up together, and Sal tells them of Returning here and Kendall’s Forge, and mentions his wife and two-year-old, Cheralie. 😬 Squire explains that there’s a few towns where the Returned pop up like clockwork every year or two, but that it’s rare to meet a Returned and not everyone may take kindly to it.
Bax finds something familiar about Squire, despite the brown eyes, and blurts out, “Ethan??” until Squire insists he’s just Squire and stares intently at Sav, who gets it and slowly nods. They all take first watch behind an illusion of a boulder that Sav casts at the entrance of the cave, and Ethan catches them up on what he’s been up to for the past 15 years; the Veil was like a paradise, but on the other side they fought the angels, and last saw Danica flying toward them before the world ended in a white-out. Bax says he’s been here 6-8 months. Ethan says Merrick and the others are Relicors, people who try to find artifacts to gain access to the White Crown.
Sal and Peach catch up on 10 years of distance while on watch. He says his wife is the one who built and fixes his arm, and they have a two-year-old named Cheralie Proserpina Morel, while he goes on walkabouts every year, trying to find his old friends.
They dream that night, of waves of undead and a dark castle, and wake to find an intruder has barged in.
