Ixtalan
Myrwood
Autumn 64
Nobody is happy that Xalati can’t be found, least of all Ixtalan, who is mysteriously adult and has a bunch of extra memories of growing up in a slightly different Shepherd’s End. Kaisi, who had had a mindlink up with Xalati during their separate Myrwood investigations, tries to contact her but only gets a jumbled mess back (but it does seem to be received).
Peach confesses her feelings to Salinger, who says he isn’t a hero worthy of her yet and wants to be, first.
Briggs Bramblehorn says the survivors are interested and ready to travel with them to Shepherd’s End. He mentions he only knew two really smart people; Maigran is dead, but Blue might still be around, and he lived in an old stone tower to the east (the tower the Verdicts raided).
Aureya and Kaisi sneak off to search through the remains of this-Maigran’s workshop; they find books and notes. Esmund sees the letters between Maigran and “B” are directly about cascading reality failures and an object that can prevent that, called the Memento; these letters are 20 years old, before the tower raid. With this material, he thinks he can alter the Door Jamb to actively create tears and go to new planes, and that this “Memento” already exists.
Esmund tells Briggs that they can travel together until the tower, but after that the Myrwood survivors will have to travel on to Shepherd’s End alone, as the Shep’s End kids have business at the stone tower.
Salinger wanders off to ponder, and finds a large, heroic oil painting of Miranda Pine standing behind Kaylie seated in a chair.
