Northgate
Winter 216
Moments before Garbon’s execution
Roux smiles as he rounds the corner, just two streets down from the Roasted Swan. But his smile fades as soon as hears the crowd and the crackling of the flames that engulf what was once their home.
He immediately starts sprinting towards the commotion, drawing his long sword and steeling himself for what awaits. But the past four years, as trying as they were, does not prepare him for the sight as he rounds the last corner.
Flames lick the sky and heat drenches the atmosphere. And there, in the red glow of the chaos, is young Garbon, at the point of a sword wielded by a Wolf.
Roux skids to a halt, eyes wide in disbelief, not yet noticed by the guards surrounding his friend. His anger grows, quashing the fear that was all consuming moments ago. In an instant the tip of the blade plunges forward… and stops.
This is a magic Roux didn’t know he had. The power to slow time. Stop time. Could he… reverse it? As the razor-sharp blade lingers inches from his friend, he remembers Garbon’s voice just after the tin mine collapsed back in Aelorean’s Crossing all those years ago. Trapped in the darkness, “Uh, Roux?” “Yeah, Garbon?” “It’s gonna be okay… Don’t worry. It’s gonna be okay.”
Time comes crashing back into existence, and the Wolf’s blade pierces his friend. Roux’s mouth opens to scream, but before anything comes out, he’s struck from behind, and dragged unconscious into the nearby alley by a cloaked figure with curly brown hair.
