The survivors of Aelorean’s Crossing reach Northgate, the north-most bastion of Isendel, where they find an occupation of Painted Swans at war with the tribes of Jorung. After investigating rumors, a smuggler is hired to deliver Danica, Sireli, and Rowen north into Jorung to find Caern Baleburn and Al’Rowan, while the others wait in Northgate.
Ethan and Garbon assume the identities of Luke Bastion and Francis Alastor, rubbing elbows with nobles, and, along with Bax, learn to dance. Talith discovers signs of the Cult of the Suffering and defeats them, and the group restores an abandoned inn and names it the Roasted Swan. Bax begins efforts to join the Hunter’s Guild, brave hunters who venture into the northern wilds to capture dangerous and powerful beasts to battle in the Grand Theater, the Coliseum of Northgate run by an enterprising self-made noble named Sebastian Chance.
